This is the first way most engineers sort belt scales. It comes down to how many idlers sit on the weight frame.


  1. Single Idler Belt Scales: One idler. One load cell suspension. These are the workhorses of the industry. Accuracy usually sits around ±1%. They cost less, install fast, and do the job for inventory tracking and most in-process weighing.

  2. Dual Idler Belt Scales: Two idlers on the weight frame. Accuracy jumps to ±0.5% or better. The longer weight span smooths out belt tension swings and small mechanical noise. Plants going for tighter production tracking love these.

Types Of Belt Scales By Weighing Technology

  1. Strain Gauge Load Cell Scales (Electro-Mechanical): The most common type by a wide margin. Load cells flex under weight and send a voltage signal. Modern designs use a full strain-gauge suspension with very little mechanical linkage. They're accurate, rugged, and easy to calibrate. Most new installs go this route.

  2. Hydraulic Load Cell Scales: Less common now, but still around. They use fluid pressure to read the load. Useful in harsh environments where electronics can struggle, like steel mills or dust-heavy mines.

  3. Nuclear (Gamma) Belt Scales: These don't touch the belt at all. A gamma source sits above, a detector sits below, and the system reads how much radiation gets blocked by the material. Useful when load cells can't fit, when belt tension is unpredictable, or when wind keeps fouling readings. The catch? Licensing, safety rules, and ongoing radiation source management. Not for everyone.

  4. Mechanical Lever Scales: Old school. Some still operate. But most plants are phasing them out. Maintenance is heavy, and accuracy drifts.

Modular Bolt-In Scales
