In a rock quarry or aggregate plant, you'll usually find belt scales at three key points. Right after the primary crusher. On secondary or tertiary feeds. And at the loadout conveyor, where product heads to trucks, rail cars, or barges.


How Does a Belt Scale Work? The Core Logic

Belt scales do one simple thing. They measure the weight of material sitting on a known length of belt, then multiply that by the belt's speed. The result is mass per unit time.

Calibration is where good belt scales go wrong. Or stay right. Plant conditions are brutal. Dust, vibration, temperature swings, and belt wear. All of it pushes the scale away from its factory zero.


Three common calibration methods are used:


  1. Static test weight: Place certified weights on the weighbridge to simulate a known load. Quick. Repeatable.

  2. Chain calibration: Drape a calibrated chain across the idlers, simulating a uniform belt load while the belt runs.

What Trips Up Belt Scale Accuracy

  • Material buildup on idlers. Dust and fines cake onto rollers, throwing off the zero.

  • Belt tension changes. Wet weather, cold mornings, or a worn tail pulley can swing tension wildly.
